Cover feature on Angel Bat Dawid
2018-19
I photographed Angel Bat Dawid for a cover story with Chicago Reader, documenting her in her studio as both a musician and a cultural force. Known for her work as a composer, clarinetist, and educator, Angel’s practice is deeply tied to lineage, spirituality, and the evolution of Black music. The approach was intentionally stripped back to allow her space, her presence, and her instruments to speak without over-direction.
The images anchored both the print cover and a multi-page feature, as well as the digital story, capturing a moment that felt grounded, intentional, and historically aware. The work reflects a broader focus in my practice: documenting artists not just as subjects, but as part of a larger cultural continuum.
