Cover feature on Chicago’s Punk Scene
2018
I photographed members of Black, Brown, and Indigenous Crew (BBIC) in Chicago’s Black punk scene for Chicago Reader, bringing the band into my studio to create a series of portraits that challenged the narrow visual language often associated with punk. The story itself pushed back on the idea that punk is inherently white, and the imagery needed to reflect that tension—direct, unapologetic, and rooted in identity.
The final work ran as a print cover, multi-page spread, and digital feature, positioning the band within a broader cultural conversation around race, music, and visibility. Rather than leaning into cliché aesthetics, the images center presence and individuality, reframing who gets to be seen and remembered within the genre.
